Water Safety Day

On May 16, 2024, Nevada Union High School hosted a successful Water Safety Day during lunch, with a great turnout. Students had the opportunity to engage with first responders and learn about the dangers of the local rivers. The event featured presentations from the Nevada County Consolidated Swift Water Rescue, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department Marine Patrol Unit & Boat, the North San Juan Fire Department, and Yuba Net. Chris Espedal, the Director of Facilities and School Safety for the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, supported these efforts along with NCSOS Health Services Coordinator Stephanie Razcowski, R.N.. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the hazards of river conditions, including cold temperatures, rapid flows, underwater obstructions, and unpredictable water levels due to ongoing repairs at Spaulding Lake. The key message to the community was to “Stay out, Stay alive.”
