About the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools
John Baggett is proud to serve as Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, bringing a deep, full-circle commitment to supporting local students. Prior to stepping into this role, Mr. Baggett spent 10 years as a district superintendent, including four years at the Nevada City School District. His leadership is grounded in an exceptional breadth of experience across nearly every level of public education—having served as a teacher’s assistant, classroom teacher, principal, director, and district superintendent.
His extensive administrative and teaching background includes serving as Principal and Director of Education in Grass Valley. In Sacramento, he served as Director of Technology, Science, and Visual and Performing Arts, supporting music teachers across 21 schools in a district of over 10,000 students. In Placer County, John taught at Newcastle Elementary, where he managed technology, served as athletic director, and coached sports, earning the 1996 Placer County Office of Education Teacher Who Makes a Difference award.
Known for building strong relationships in school communities, John has consistently enhanced school culture, academic performance, and community engagement. His leadership includes overseeing local initiatives totaling over $50 million to improve school facilities, libraries, and technology, as well as advancing arts and social-emotional learning across urban and rural schools. As current Board President, he has also helped champion Community Roots to bring local, scratch-cooked meals to Nevada County students. Over his career, he has been honored as Nevada County ACSA Middle School Principal Administrator of the Year (2012) and received the California School Library Association Administrative Leadership Award (2006).
A product of Nevada County schools and a Nevada Union High School graduate, John earned his Bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine, followed by a teaching credential, Master’s in Education, and Administrative Credential. He and his wife Katy, a local teacher, reside in Nevada County, having raised two daughters who attended Grass Valley schools and graduated from Nevada Union High School. In their free time, they enjoy exploring local hiking and running trails, immersing themselves in the vibrant local arts, and participating in the close-knit, supportive community here.
