Art Docent Program

Nevada County possesses a large, diverse community of professional artists and arts organizations – a valuable resource for a rural county.  Although, there is no one organization that works closely to coordinate educational arts resources in our schools.  Recognizing a need for leadership in school-community arts partnerships, the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office created and became a countywide coordinator of the Art Docent Program K-6 visual art curricula, now in operation for well over 20 years.

Parent volunteers train to become Art Docents.  Each month, they present lessons teaching students about fine art, famous painters, and artistic techniques.  Full color reproductions of paintings are taken into each classroom during the art docent sessions, followed by active discussion, and hands-on art experiences.

Student work is placed on display in the classroom, and at the countywide art show each March.

The parent volunteer Art Docents appreciate being trained in various forms of art but say that the real highlight of the program is getting to know so many children as they present the lessons and experience art together.
