Nevada County Reads 2017

THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir

Nevada County Reads is an annual community read program sponsored by the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools office and Nevada County Libraries.  This years’ pick is THE MARTIAN by Andy Weir

The Martian is a 2011 science fiction novel. The story follows an American astronaut, Mark Watney, as he becomes stranded alone on Mars in the year 2035 and must improvise in order to survive.  This first novel by Andy Weir is beautifully crafted with much drama, humor, and scientific research.  It has subsequently been released as a movie.  But read the book first; it’s one that you can’t put down! (369 pages)

There are always numerous free community events related to the book.  Information is forthcoming.

Please also be reminded that there is a high school writing competition in conjunction with the Nevada County Reads program.  The High School Writing Competition guidelines are available at each high school site – in the library or English Department – or you can download them here: Download Nevada County Reads Student Guidelines 2017
